Bush and Brown Share Impatience on Iran

Published: April 18, 2008
WASHINGTON — President Bush and Prime Minister Gordon Brown of Britain expressed mounting impatience Thursday with Iran for proceeding with its nuclear enrichment work in defiance of the international community.

Senator John McCain met with Mr. Brown at the British Embassy on Thursday.

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton with Mr. Brown on Thursday.

Senator Barack Obama with Mr. Brown on Thursday.
Earlier, the prime minister met with the three presidential candidates, but he smilingly side-stepped a question about which he might feel more affinity for.

While Tehran argues that its nuclear program is purely for civilian purposes, Mr. Bush told reporters that it “is, in my judgment, naïve” to think that the know-how that Iranians are developing could not be transferred to military efforts to produce an atomic weapon.

Iranian leaders, he said, standing beside the prime minister with American flags and Union Jacks resplendent in the background, had proved themselves “untrustworthy.”

Mr. Brown, who said he would be talking to other European leaders about further tightening economic sanctions against Iran, said, "I make no apology" for doing so, as long as Tehran defies United Nations demands that it halt its enrichment program.

The president and prime minister also said they were working together to help alleviate a building global food crisis that has produced food riots in several countries. On other topics, from Darfur to trade, the two leaders stood shoulder to shoulder.

During a brief news conference that plowed little new ground but underscored yet again the closeness of the U.S.-British “special relationship,” reporters essayed a few questions that seemed almost guaranteed to be shrugged off: A British journalist asked Mr. Bush whether his relationship to Mr. Brown’s predecessor, Tony Brown, had not been closer (“False,” the president shot back, “we’ve got a great relationship”).

And Mr. Brown politely sidestepped another such question — on whether he had struck up a special rapport with any of the three candidates to be the next president.

Before he could speak, Mr. Bush, who seemed amused by the question, interjected: "One of those three has a good chance of winning!” The prime minister then said that “it is for Americans to decide who their next president is going to be,” adding that he had been “delighted” to meet Senators John McCain, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama during back-to-back interviews earlier at the British ambassador’s residence.

No matter who replaces President Bush, Mr. Brown added, the relationship between the United States and Britain will remain “strong and steadfast.”

Earlier, the candidates’ aides offered only bare-bones descriptions of their meetings, which took place without staff members present.

Mr. Obama, was the first to arrive and the only one of the three not to have met previously with Mr. Brown, said in a statement released later: "Prime Minister Brown and I discussed our commitment to strengthen the historic transatlantic alliance, and to confront common challenges like the ongoing operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, the instability in the global economy and the need to support democracy and prosperity in Africa. The Prime Minister has been a critically important partner for the United States and I look forward to working with him in the months and years ahead.”

A Clinton aide noted that the two leaders knew each other previously and had a “good meeting” that covered Iraq, Afghanistan, China, global climate change, and the international economy. The aide, speaking on grounds of anonymity, described both politicians as “wonky people,” saying they spoke until just minutes before Senator McCain arrived, ignoring assistants’ efforts to wind up the session sooner.

Melissa Shuffield, the Senate spokeswoman for Senator McCain, noted that he and Mr. Brown had talked at length last month in London during the senator’s trip to Europe and the Middle East. “They touched more on those topics this time around — the importance of the special relationship, climate change,” as well as Iran and the events in southern Iraq.

Ms. Shuffield said they had also discussed the senator’s idea of a League of Democracies — an organization that would supplement the United Nations and promote a more cooperative U.S. foreign policy.

The White House endorsed the meetings. "We think it’s probably a wise move by the prime minister to get to know one of the individuals who will be elected president a year from now," said Tony Fratto, a presidential spokesman. "It makes sense."

The president had underscored the durability of the relationship, saying, “Our relationship is very special, and it’s -- I’m confident future presidents will keep it that way.”

CIA Protects Al-Qaeda Group From Extradition

The CIA is protecting an Al-Qaeda linked terror group formerly headed by the alleged mastermind of 9/11 from being extradited to Iran according to an ABC News report, which also reveals that U.S. intelligence has been meeting and advising the group that has been blamed for bombings in Iran.

As the London Telegraph reported last year, "The CIA is giving arms-length support, supplying money and weapons, to an Iranian militant group, Jundullah, which has conducted raids into Iran from bases in Pakistan."

Jundullah is a Sunni Al-Qaeda offshoot terrorist group formerly headed by the alleged mastermind of 9/11, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, reported the Asia Times in 2004.

The group also produces propaganda tapes and literature for al-Qaeda's media wing, As-Sahab, which is in turn closely affiliated with the military-industrial complex front IntelCenter, the group that makes available Al-Qaeda videos to the western media.

IntelCenter was caught last year adding their logo to alleged Al-Qaeda tapes at the same time as the Al-Qaeda media brand, stoking suspicions that the Pentagon affiliated IntelCenter was directly releasing fake Al-Qaeda videos.

Jundullah has been blamed for a number of bombings inside Iran aimed at destabilizing Ahmadinejad's government and is also active in Pakistan, having been fingered for its involvement in attacks on police stations and car bombings at the Pakistan-US Cultural Center in 2004.

"In another sign of growing tensions with the United States, Pakistan is threatening to turn over to Iran six members of a tribal militant group Iran claims are "spies" for the CIA," reports ABC News.

"The group, Jundullah, operates in Baluchistan on both sides of the border between Iran and Pakistan and has carried out a number of violent attacks on Iranian army facilities and officers inside the country."

"The CIA has denied any direct ties with the group, but U.S. officials tell ABC News U.S. intelligence officers frequently meet and advise Jundullah leaders, and current and former intelligence officers are working to prevent the men from being sent to Iran."

The fact that the highest echelons of the U.S. intelligence apparatus are meeting, advising and funding Sunni Al-Qaeda groups as a means of facilitating terrorist bombings and regime change in Iran completely invalidates the "war on terror" as a fabled fraud and renders ludicrous Bush administration rhetoric about fighting Al-Qaeda cells in Iraq.

Neo-Cons drooling at the prospect of an invasion of Iran have hardly been shy about their support of terror attacks aimed against Iran by means of Jundullah, MEK and other groups listed as terror organizations by the State Department.

Ret. Gen. Thomas McInerney, who was part of the Pentagon's "message force multipliers" propaganda program, recently called for the Bush administration to commit acts of terror in Iran on Fox News.

In November 2007, Fox and Friends host Brian Kilmeade openly called for US support for acts of terrorism, such as car bombings, in Tehran. Colonel David Hunt, who has over 29 years of military experience including extensive operational experience in Special Operations, Counter Terrorism and Intelligence Operations, agreed with Kilmeade, stating "absolutely" in response to Kilmead's question about whether cars should start blowing up in Tehran.

Last weekend, the Iranian Intelligence Ministry busted a CIA-backed terror group that was planning to bomb scientific, educational, and religious centers, and carry out assassinations in Iran, according to a report in the Tehran Times.

Iran Busts CIA-Backed Terror Group
Announcement follows Neo-Con General's urge for Bush administration to support terrorist bombings in Iran
The Iranian Intelligence Ministry busted a CIA-backed terror group that was planning to bomb scientific, educational, and religious centers, and carry out assassinations, according to a report in the Tehran Times. The arrests come weeks after Ret. Gen. Thomas McInerney urged the U.S. to carry out terror bombings in Iran.

"The Intelligence Ministry on Saturday released details of the detection and dismantling of a terrorist network affiliated to the United States," reports the newspaper.

"The United States Central Intelligence Agency comprehensively supported the terrorist group by arming it, training its members, and sponsoring its inhumane activities in Iran, the Intelligence Ministry stated."

The attack on a religious center in Shiraz last month which killed thirteen people and wounded 190 was blamed on the same group and according to the report, "it also had plans to carry out similar attacks on the Tehran International Book Fair, the Russian Consulate in Gilan Province, oil pipelines in southern Iran, and other targets."
While it's obviously naive to take a report out of Iranian state-controlled media at face value, top Neo-Cons have been calling for the US to back terror groups in Iran and other reports clearly indicate that this program has already been in place for years.

On Friday we reported on the comments of Ret. Gen. Thomas McInerney, who in a Fox News appearance publicly called for the U.S. government to support groups like MEK (Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization), which is listed by the State Department as a terrorist organization, and carry out deadly bombings in Iran.

"Here’s what I would suggest to you. Number one, we take the National Council for Resistance to Iran off the terrorist list that the Clinton Administration put them on as well as the Mujahedin-e Khalq at the Camp Ashraf in Iraq," said McInerney.

"Then I would start a tit-for-tat strategy which I wrote up in the Wall Street Journal a year ago: For every EFP that goes off and kills Americans, two go off in Iran. No questions asked. People don’t have to know how it was done. It’s a covert action. They become the most unlucky country in the world," he added.

Last November, Fox and Friends host Brian Kilmeade openly called for US support for acts of terrorism, such as car bombings, in Tehran.

The U.S. government is already funding MEK and the group has been linked with numerous bombings inside Iran over the course of the last few years. The organization has also killed U.S. troops and civilians since the 70's.

According to Global Security.org, "In the early 1970s, angered by U.S. support for the pro-Western shah, MEK members killed several U.S. soldiers and civilians working on defense projects in Iran. MEK members also supported the 1979 takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, in which 52 Americans were held hostage for 444 days."

In addition - British SAS have been caught training insurgents in Iraq to carry out hi-tech bombings that are later blamed on Iran.

Another Iranian-based terror group that the Bush administration is already funding as a means of regime change in Iran is Jundullah - a Sunni Al-Qaeda terrorist group formerly headed by the alleged mastermind of 9/11, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

"The CIA is giving arms-length support, supplying money and weapons, to an Iranian militant group, Jundullah, which has conducted raids into Iran from bases in Pakistan," the London Telegraph reported last year.

The group has been blamed for a number of bombings inside Iran aimed at destabilizing Ahmadinejad's government and is also active in Pakistan, having been fingered for its involvement in attacks on police stations and car bombings at the Pakistan-US Cultural Center in 2004.

As award-winning journalist Seymour Hersh reported back in 2004, U.S. intelligence and Israel’s Mossad are busy at work stirring up trouble in Iran in preparation for an attack on that country. In early 2005, the Guardian reported that “American special forces have been on the ground inside Iran scouting for US air strike targets for suspected nuclear weapons sites."
